Abstract

This article examines the use of effective methods for developing subject-specific and key competencies in the field of biology. It analyzes the significance of modern approaches in biological education, as well as the effectiveness of methodologies aimed at deepening students’ subject knowledge and enhancing their key competencies. The relevance of this research is determined by the need to improve biology teaching methods and to adapt educational programs and curricula in accordance with contemporary scientific approaches.

As part of the study, a systematic analysis of scientific literature was conducted, including an overview and comparison of theoretical and methodological concepts. Based on the generalization, comparison, and analysis of theoretical and methodological discussions, scientific works were systematized, critical perspectives on concept definitions were examined, and key conclusions were formulated. The works and ideas of scholars who developed the concept of competency-based education were classified according to methodological research directions, while definitions provided in the scientific literature were differentiated and analyzed in the process of identifying the specifics and distinctions between subject-specific and professional competencies.

Subject-specific competence focuses on acquiring in-depth scientific knowledge, whereas key competencies contribute to the development of students’ life and professional skills. The advancement of subject-specific competencies in biology has been the focus of numerous researchers in the fields of pedagogy, methodology, and biological sciences. Various methods aimed at enhancing these competencies were examined, including experimental and competency-based approaches. Additionally, modern teaching methods aligned with the updated educational content were proposed. These methods increase students’ engagement with education and foster their ability to think critically. Furthermore, special attention is given to methods designed to develop self-learning skills, scientific reasoning, and practical problem-solving abilities.

The study involved a quantitative and qualitative analysis of survey results, which were processed using percentage indicators. Based on the collected data, relevant conclusions were drawn. The authors of the article highlight that the use of modern biology teaching methods can improve students’ academic proficiency and better prepare them for conducting scientific research in the future. The article provides valuable information and methodological recommendations for education specialists, teachers, and researchers.
