The article is devoted to the formation of the cognitive-linguistic direction, which is one of the leading ones in modern world science. The scientific concepts of various scientists in the field of cognitive linguistics are described. The questions of the significance and importance of the formation of this science from the point of view of various authors are considered. Difficulties in the interaction of linguistics and psychology were identified. Various sources of cognitive linguistics are described, such as linguistic semantics, cognitive psychology, data from linguistic typology and ethnolinguistics, which allowed us to better understand what is universal in the structure of language; neurolinguistics, which studies language as the basis for cognition of the mental activity of the human brain as a whole; psycholinguistics, which combines with cognitive linguistics common problems related to the universal mechanisms of language acquisition and use, with the universal strategies and supporting elements used.
