This article discusses the issues of career guidance work of Kazakhstani schools and universities, highlights the basic rules and procedure for conducting this work. The purpose of the article is to study the activities carried out when entering universities, methods and recommendations used abroad are studied and presented. A test for «Determining professional aptitudes» for high school students (including school leavers and applicants) from the famous Lithuanian psychologist L. Jovaishi, modified by G. Rezapkina, is proposed. Various methods of determining motivation for learning are presented. Based on the analysis, the method proposed by A.A. Rean and V.A. Yakunin was chosen as the most suitable. Further, according to this methodology, a survey was conducted in the form of a questionnaire among doctoral students and undergraduates of three universities in Kazakhstan, the purpose of which was to identify what they were guided by and what they relied on when choosing postgraduate education. In this article, as a result of reviewing the results of university students who took part in the survey, it became clear that they had been wrong career guidance during their school years. It can be seen that the choice of specialty is not the preference of the applicants themselves, but the choice of "assistants", represented by parents, friends, etc. The analysis is carried out and the main stages of the experiment are described. The results obtained confirm the relevance of the study. The issue discussed in this article is little studied in our country, and thus can be used as a tool and provide great help to graduates. That is, the results of research and the methods used will help applicants after graduation to make the right decision in choosing a future profession.
