DEBATE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION IN RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TEACHING FOR TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The article explores the role of debate technology in Russian language classes for students in technical universities. The authors conducted analysis of contemporary scientific researches dedicated to use of debates in higher education. It is noted that this pedagogical technology helps to achieve educational goals in the process of learning Russian as a second language. The main peculiar features of educational debates procedure in Russian language classes for future specialists in technical fields are outlined, taking into account their language proficiency levels. Types of debates, such as speed debates, classical debates, and modified debates, are described in terms of their application in groups with specific language proficiency levels. The textual form of debates is identified as the most common one regardless of the audience language level. It is also asserted here that at the Beginner and Pre-Intermediate levels, it is advisable to conduct debates on lexical topics related to social and everyday issues, while at the Intermediate and Advanced levels, debates on scientific topics are recommended. Specific examples from practical experience of conducting debates in Russian language classes are provided here in the article. Emphasis is placed on the existence of several stages in organizing debates, and the importance of the final reflective stage is highlighted. To conclude, the article shows effectiveness of debate technology for developing students' communicative skills and increasing their competencies in Russian language.
