This article discusses the features of the implementation of a competence-based approach in teaching; in particular, the authors explore the problem of assessing students' academic achievements. The influence of global trends at the world educational space related to digitalization and the shift in the focus of learning from the teacher to the student, actualizes the issues of improving approaches to teaching and evaluating the educational achievements of future specialists. Competencies, as one of the key components of educational achievements, are of particular interest for measurement in the learning process. The complex nature of competencies necessitates a systematic, in-depth approach to their assessment, since they are not only the final, but also the starting point of learning. The educational achievement assessment system includes a set of targeted interdependent control and evaluation actions in order to increase the educational achievements of each student, and in the future, the quality of education as a whole.
Abroad, both individual countries and international organizations are puzzled by the issue of competence assessment, various methods and approaches are used to measure students' competencies.
The authors consider a number of practical aspects necessary for the development of a system for assessing academic achievements of university students. Exploring the issue of the methodology for assessing students' competencies, we propose our own systematic approach using the capabilities of ICT. The proposed model can be used by teachers and university students to develop their own methods for assessing competencies.
