The growing emphasis on English language teaching in Kazakhstan has made it a key instrument for expanding international opportunities. Accordingly, implementing an elective IELTS (International English Language Testing System) preparation course focused on developing students’ receptive and productive skills has become increasingly relevant in the school curriculum. IELTS assesses academic English proficiency and is widely required for admission to foreign universities and participation in international programs. School-based IELTS preparation helps students systematically develop language skills, master exam strategies, and reduce test-related anxiety. This article examines the advantages and challenges of preparing school learners for IELTS through an elective course aimed at enhancing graduates’ English proficiency. The study employed quantitative methods, including a questionnaire survey and pedagogical observation during the implementation of the author-designed program, “Developing Skills Required for IELTS.” The research involved 76 students with different English proficiency levels from a specialized lyceum in Astana. The findings showed that systematic preparation within the school curriculum promotes the balanced development of productive and receptive skills and increases students’ motivation. Despite challenges related to productive language skills, limited instructional time, and psychological pressure, students demonstrated strong interest and perseverance. The practical significance of the study lies in confirming the feasibility of integrating IELTS preparation into school practice. The program provides balanced development of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Regular practice, individualized feedback, and structured instruction improved idea organization, speech fluency, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Thus, with sound methodological organization and psychological support, this elective course can become an effective component of language education in Kazakhstani schools and contribute to successful preparation for international examinations.
