Abstract

The article analyzes the issues of the formation of cartographic literacy of future geography teachers. The map is a source of information that provides information about the phenomena and processes occurring between nature and society. Geographical research is conducted on the basis of maps. Any research should start with a map and end with a map. Therefore, each activity of geography teachers is very closely connected with a geographical map. Special attention in the learning outcomes of educational programs in pedagogical universities is paid to the formation of future geography teachers' skills in the correct use and analysis of a geographical map. Cartographic literacy is an essential component of a teacher's professional competence.  The purpose of the study is to identify effective methods for the formation of cartographic literacy of future geography teachers. Based on the analysis of the works of domestic and foreign scientists, the meaning and significance of the concepts "cartographic literacy", "understanding the map", "reading the map", "knowledge of the map" are revealed. The results of the test tasks of students of pedagogical orientation, conducted in order to identify the skills of working with the map, are analyzed. The types of maps in the structure of cartographic literacy, the content of a geographical map, working with a map, cartometric work, map scale, obtaining information from a map, tasks related to nomenclature, skills of working with a graphic map are analyzed. As an integral part of cartographic literacy, the resources of cartographic education, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of geographical objects and phenomena are determined. The possibilities of forming cartographic literacy of future geography teachers are revealed: consider the map as the main object of research, be able to correctly use and analyze a geographical map, use the map as a research tool.  In the research work, using pedagogical and scientific methods, an overview of sources and methods in the direction of cartographic literacy formation is given, the results of test tasks are analyzed and conclusions are drawn.
